Brian,

You are exactly right. With deference to most of the posters here, who are legitimately having problems with the AOL numbers, they fail to put any value on this concept of community.

There is genuine friendship on AOL and people will gladly pay $10 (isp connection) or $20 to use it and "belong."

I read an AOL posting recently of a member who had taken early retirement and was now consulting and spending a lot of time at home. I considered copying it for this hard core group of bears, but decided the message would be lost. This staying at home is a trend in the US. The numbers of "at home" persons, lonely, aging, and seeking a sense of community and belonging, is as dependable a trend as the increased need for healthcare.

AOL is the front runner to satisfy this desire of an aging population. You cannot look at this thing on a short term basis. Provided that it gets the cash to stay afloat a few more years, it will capture an enormous audience that wants to do more than "read" the internet. It will want to participate, and AOL will be second home for these folks.

Bears, be sure not to assume that most people in an audience are like you. Chances are, you don't listen to Oprah and never watch the soaps. But someone does.
