Highly detailed analysis of the ISA/PCI soundcard market, from the AsianSources website:

asiansources.com

ESS is mentioned several times. This article confirms that the transition from ISA to PCI audio was going much slower than expected in the second half of 1998. It even mentions that there was a *shortage* of ISA-bus chips from ESS and Yahama in the fourth quarter.

The Solo-1 chip appears to be ESS's offering for the low-end PCI audio market (competing against low-balling competitors such as Trident). The Maestro-2 is positioned as a higher-end offering (in relative terms, of course). Several companies are mentioned as using ESS's chips, but two big fish, Labway (Taiwan, ships to US PC OEMs) and Best Union (Hong Kong) are listed with Yamaha models for 1999. Hopefully ESS will not loose PC OEMs to Yamaha. I suppose that for add-in cards in the "no-name" system integrators market, the Yamaha brand name is stronger than ESS, but this doesn't really apply to PC OEMs.

People quoted in the article are saying that PCI audio will take off in the first quarter of 1999 (i.e. now).
