One further note...someone choosing to track only realized gains/loss rather than unrealized and realized combined together...The realized only method...would require carrying a static previous month securities value and a static current month ending securities value...in equal amounts...entering only purchase and sale and making the pair of entries in the sale month for a long position or making the pair of entries in the cover month for a short position...
