I wanted to see if the video card defugalty would go away in Win95..it did not..same problem..arggh

I guess I missed your posts about a video card problem. I'm not able to read everything lately, much to my regret. Sorry to hear that. What card is it?

PCI ATI Expert 98...but I do not think it has anything to do with the video card. I had a Matrox AGP card installed first and had the same problem. Whenever I change a video setting that requires a boot...the boot locks with the error message..cannot write to EBIOS while initiating device.

Your last NT install. .. months ago.... was that on a scsi disk also? But with the Adaptec controller? I remember you having some kind of recognition problem with NT back then too, but you were able to do the install. Maybe a comparison of the two installs ( then and now) would provide some clues other than a different controller ie how the controllers were configured differently or the same.

Yes it was an Adaptec card but I do not believe the problem related to the card. I unplugged all my drives except one SCSI drive for the installation process. I neglected to terminate the drive (Thanks to Dan for figuring this one out) I never did proceed with the NT install after figuring out the problem..it may have worked but I will never know.

The issue at hand relates to booting from a CD on the Mylex controller. My plan is to install NT to an IDE harddrive.

I don't think we want to backup the backup NT <g> How is one OS DI'd off of a dual boot partition?

As Spots pointed out you have to back them up together. Drive Image and Partition Magic deal with an entire partition. In many ways that is their strength. This concept is for an entire partition.

If the end result is a KOT primary with an NT/Win98 dual boot option then IMO you should clone that package. It would make sense to backup the Win98 install before progressing to the next stage just in case things go awry with the NT install.

I do not know the reason for the NT/Win98 install on the KOT. Spots may have indicated somewhere along the way. It probably has something to do with being able to access the primary NT install(only NT can see NTFS). I say go for it but backup before you do.

Having trouble following.. are you transfering 98 and 95 to IDE2 with DI then deleteing 98 from IDE 1 and installing NT there in its place? Ending setup IDE 1 master = NT, ide slave = w95, ide 2 master = KOTw98/NT backup ide 2 slave = peripheral??

I had a feeling I tried to put too much in that post<g>

I will be using Partition Magic for this operation. I want to be able to boot Win98 or Win95 from the KOT. Mostly because I cannot make up my mind between Win95 and Win98. For me the decision is between multiple monitors and virtual resolution. Win98 does Multiple monitors and Win95 does virtual resolution.

are you transfering 98 and 95 to IDE2 with DI then deleteing 98 from IDE 1 and installing NT there in its place?

Almost..I am transferring Win98 from IDE1 master to IDE1 slave. Win95 is already on the IDE slave. This will result in two primary partitions on the KOT. One with Win98 and one with Win95. Only one can be active at a time as described by Spots. To boot Win95 in lieu of Win98 or visa versa I will have to change the active status of the partition using PM (or other).

Then I will Install NT on the primary drive as a stand alone OS...at least as a starting point. It seems like multiple NT installations are common in this crowd...so down the road apiece I will probably have a multi NT somewhere..too far ahead for me right now.

So far I just have IDE1 master and slave. IDE2 is master CD. The remaining IDE slot is yet to be determined. Maybe a good candidate for the removable harddrive.

We need to talk about using only primary partitions. The idea is appealing to me.
