John--

The essay states, "Y2K will not cause 911 emergency services to fail." Consider this...I met a coder by the name of lee on an chat back in 1998. He claimed that his preparedness group (Atlantic County, NJ) had invited a telecom rep (Bell Atlantic?) to their last meeting who told them not to count on 911 phone service at roll over because Bell did not consider the service mission critical to the operation of the telecom. I was incredulous. I didn't believe lee was lying. I simply found it hard to believe that at that early date that a telecom rep would be that blunt. I continued to press for details. He then gave me the url to the group's site and told me to look at the minutes of the meeting myself. I did and lo and behold there it was with the name of the telecom rep and the quote. (I just checked the Cassandra site to see if I could find a link to the group's site as I did not save the url. No link, but the group is listed.)

Needless to say the group found the telecom rep's comments alarming. Atlantic County is home to Atlantic City which will be the site of large New Year's Eve celebrations. The residential area where lee and his group are located can only be reached by bridge access...for now at least.
