Dear Sir:
For a period of time this morning, Customers were unable to enter orders through the trading page of the E*TRADE web site. Trading through the company's interactive voice recognition system was also affected for part of the period.
The issue was specific to our trading functionality. Throughout this time, E*TRADE Customers, members and visitors continued to be able to access other content areas of the site, including news, quotes and charts. In addition, at all times, E*TRADE brokers were taking orders over the phone from our Customers.
The issue was not related to volume or to E*TRADE system capacity. Rather, it was caused by a software change which had been installed Tuesday night, and which malfunctioned. Once the diagnosis was complete, E*TRADE immediately backed out the software change and service was restored across all electronic channels.
We want to sincerely apologize for any inconvenience.
