Well, Bob, at least one of the reasons that convicted killers are ultimately released on parole is the EXTREMELY STUPID three strikes and you're out law, and also the recent, very strict drug laws. Most states cannot build prisons quickly enough to lock all these new prisoners up, and so they have no choice except to release some of the more seasoned prisoners.
I personally think that nonviolent crimes of all sorts, and non-dealing drug crimes, should be punished in more innovative ways involving house arrest, fines, community service, and counseling. I think that often we create hardened criminals in America because of the social pathologies we tolerate, and the way we treat juvenile offenders.
Incidentally, congratulations on making the 30,000nth post. It seems incredible that this thread is so old and so big now, and besides that, words seem to be failing me at the moment. Maybe I don't have any left!!! |
