Old Habits Indeed Do Die Hard (Gold Leasing)

By Professor von Braun The Rocket School of Economics

<< Some time ago we presented an article entitled The Changing of the Guard which pointed out that every era comes to an end and that often these endings tend to be resisted by the old guard, often to the degree that eventually culminates in their forced removal by way of revolt, war, massive electoral swings (where permitted) and so on.

One of the best examples of the “Old Guard” syndrome around today is the gold market. Investors tend to forget the significance of the United States being taken off the gold standard by President Nixon in the early seventies. Most of us remember what happened to him. This event signaled the end of an era, during which the gold price was set by a governmental authority, remained at a fixed price and the local currency was quasi redeemable in gold. -- cont'd -- >>
