Tom in WI:
We are hearing the marketing party line here more often than not. Traditionally, voice has been analog in nature, over 100% of the network. In fact, now, Voice has been made into data streams through out the network and it is only in the last links that voice is NOT digital (meaning data). With the advent of VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), the digital data is carried further to the end points (originator / listener). So the marketing folks still use the past as reference. But never forget, the final output will always be analog - have you ever understood a modem talking to you? <G>
For the facts, IXC lines are digital, DCI are all digital, both in coming and outgoing to the PSTN, the PSTN usally goes digital to some end termination device in your neighborhood, where it is finally converter to analog and brought into your house. For cellular / PCS, it is all digital over their network already, getting converterd to analog at your phone (so you can understand <G>). |
