Mike, I'd be happy to defer on this issue, but my reading of the literature suggests that due to the osmotic gradient produced by zinc ions in the mouth, Cold-Eeze works almost immediately. In addition to its action against the rhinovirus, it's also believed to produce a physiological reaction on the facial nerve endings as rapidly as 1 to 3 minutes. This reaction alleviates some cold symptoms. Think of how putting a firm finger on your upper lip can prevent an incipient sneeze from coming on. In effect, Cold-Eeze is believed to produce a chemical version of that firm finger. Not sure if Zicam would produce the safe physiological effect. But I do believe that the idea that Cold-Eeze works slowly compared to a nasal spray is wrong.

For a discussion of this, I suggest you take a look at the 1996 Medical Hypothesis article I cited before.
