Ok, leave "values clarification" aside, I have no idea what it means myself. I'd be perfectly happy to have sex education taught on a strictly informative basis, as long as contraception is presented clearly. Realisticly, I doubt that will ever be allowed to happen. If evolution, a central tenet of modern biology, must be watered down to almost nothing, in order to avoid offending creationists, I can't see how sex education will ever be taught on a strictly informational basis, in a lot of places anyway.
On third trimester abortions, again, nobody likes the idea in general. But the procedure is rare, less that 0.1% of abortions, and I think the energy devoted to that cause might do more good addressed to other areas, if you really wanted to save babies' lives. I will be rash and raise another hot button issue. Although I think a case can be made for better regulation of handgun sales in the U.S., I think it's politically a dead horse, any debate on what might be reasonable will be shouted down by "slippery slope" arguments. Arguments about abortion rights are similar, there might be reasonable restrictions that could be made, but I think the pro-choice side more reason to be concerned with the "slippery slope", than gun rights advocates do, given the history of absolute bans and the expressed sentiments of most of the main groups arguing for the PBA ban.
Now I must duck and cover. It's just an analogy, guys. |
