Could you elaborate a little on:

...get a back up broker. I have one and any stock I want to sell through E*Trade I can sell short with the other broker to box it until E*Trade get back on line and then close both positions or close the one that's against me.

There is nothing I'd like better than to internalize your motto of:

Stop bitching and learn how to trade.

The above idea, about getting a backup broker and shorting a stock when you want to sell when e*tirade (sic) is down, sounds plausible I would just like some details if you don't mind.
