Vendors Up the Ante in Storage

I'm not certain if this article from Computer Retail Week has been posted here before, so I apologize if this is a duplication:

techweb.com

various snips I found interesting - bold is mine:

"Iomega's 100MB Zip drive led the category in 1998, garnering 66.9 percent of unit sales, according to PC Data, Reston, Va. This compares with 14.5 percent for Imation's SuperDisk, and negligible sales of Sony's HiFD drive. Iomega's Jaz drive and SyQuest's SparQ accounted for most of the category's remaining units sold."

...

"Sony shipped its 200MB HiFD floppy to CompUSA in November, then pulled the drive a month later because of "product line issues," a Sony spokesman said. He vowed HiFD will return this month or next. He said the recall will not hinder the product's future."

...

"Imation has shipped about 3.8 million SuperDisk units since it launched the 120MB floppy drive. Later this month, retailers will receive a second-generation offering with 2x speed, said Jon Siegel, global SuperDisk marketing manager for Imation. Rolling out the 2x drives is an important milestone because the primary criticism of SuperDisk is its slow speed, he said."
