Why is the world a better place? Because each petroleum engineer builds on the knowledge which came before. Today the world is awash with oil. Thirty years ago, drilling a productive well was much more difficult. I don't know whether Howard Hughes said that petroleum engineers were a dime a dozen, but Howard Hughes merely won the battle of the swift sperm, he was no great shakes in his own right.
