Andy,

The current situation is way, way, way beyond a matter of "service", IMO. We are not talking about "service" in the sense of some smiling customer representative doing his or her job. We're talking about a very serious breach of fiduciary duty.

I can't accept any suggestion that E*trade has merely a "service" problem. When E*trade gets into the pockets of innocent customers because of their own abject incompetence and total lack of a functional back-up system, that goes beyond a "service" problem...big time. It becomes a matter of serious irresponsibility and accountability.

I beg to differ, and in the strongest possible terms, with anyone who would in any way suggest this is a matter of "service", or that this is an issue of minor importance.
