The other side of Partition Magic...

I blew away my Win98 installation. I was trying to clone my Win98 partition to a second partition on the same drive. This was in preparation for the NT install. I have not yet installed Drive Image so I opted for Partition Magic as it is fast and easy...

Halfway through the cloning process the machine froze. I waited about five minutes and tried to shut it off..no go. I held the off button in for five seconds and off she went ( I think you discovered that)

Well on boot and PM execution from IDE2 Win95 I discovered a long yellow bar for IDE1 where we normally see a green one. One error message I think 804.

I tried formatting the drive..no options available. I tried rebooting...still a yellow bar. Strangely I could still boot the drive. The Win98 install on IDE1 still worked!!

I tried the Maxtor drive setup utility...it came with the second Maxtor drive. It detected two drives. I progressed through the screens, it checked the drive and then asked me what kind of format. I told it to go ahead and copy the other drive (cloning was given as an option) It started and then said no way, can not be done, error in the MBR?? I tried again, told it FAT 32..no go...tried again..told it FAT..no go. Now I start seeing gobledy goop in the entries for the drive.

I start looking for the receipt. This sounds like a job for Maxtor tech support. I boot a couple more times, try formatting again and voila..she works.

So I cloned the Win95 drive with the Maxtor utility and every thing is back to normal. Except now I have two Win95 installations and no more Win98.

Thoughts

I should have made a Drive Image first.

I should have booted at each step of the process. I resized the partition before I cloned it. I did not boot in between. It may be a factor and it may not. My experience tells me to do the 'linear' thing..ie one step at a time.

I was almost there. The risk is highest in the beginning..before the redundant backup systems are in place. No great loss for me... as Spots says, the risk at this point is not great as I can just reinstall Win98.
