Why I'm long CMGi:
(I also posted this to The Motley Fool boards.)
I've looked long and hard at other incubator companies like SFE, WCAP, and Safeguard, and I decided that what I like about CMGi isn't just its incubation ability. What I like about CMGi boils down to the following:
1. EXPERIENCE. Except for AOL, CMGi has been public longer than any other "pure Internet" company. Five years in real-time experience is like 35 "Internet years" experience. Combine this with the fact that the visionary at-the-helm is inspirational, enthusiastic, skillful, tenacious, personable, and has incredible intuition.
2. THE ABILITY TO REINVENT ITSELF. CMGi is a very hard company to define, because they do so many things. But believe me, wherever there is action on the Internet, CMGi is either there behind the scenes, or right now figuring out a way to wedge themselves in there behind the scenes.
3. RELATIONSHIPS. If a company has an Internet presence of any sort, chances are they have some kind of past or present relationship with CMGi. Pick a player, any player: Microsoft, Intel, Cisco, America Online, Amazon, Yahoo, Lycos, AT&T...
4. DIRECT MARKETING SKILLS. CMGi's background is in direct marketing, which means they know how to target, package, spin, and close. This is useful in many facets of business -- from keeping institutional and individual investors happy, to working the media machine with a barrage of press releases, to building strategic alliances with corporate partners, to designing technologies that will make the most of the medium that is the Internet.
and last but not least
5. LUCK Look at the history of the company, the management, the subsidiaries... and you'll see a history of being in the right place at the right time. Much more so than being strictly coincidence... luck, after all, favors the prepared. But I am in awe of how this company continually gets more and more favorable deals.
So in my mind, the incubation is a bonus... CMGi the *company* is what awes me. I'm proud to be a long shareholder nine months and running. COPIED BY DAVE DICKERSON |
