Anglo is an absolute master of sleight of hand, double talk and smoke and mirrors. But the company is enormously powerful and has great behind the scenes influence in many countries including SAf. Their particular talent is playing both sides of the street eg US and USSR, in Cold War days, while letting each party believe that they are the "only one". Even now, while Mandela, Mbeki and other pseudo-communists publically slate Anglo for its activity in the apartheid days, it's just my gut-feel that Anglo finances the ANC, or certain key personnel, behind the curtain and influences its policies. To maintain their grip on the diamond cartel, deBeers, it is said, was not averse to the use of hit-men. At the moment, diamond sales (in all liklihood to deBeers) finance Unita in its struggle against the socialist government of Angola. Many books have been written about Anglo and the Oppenheimers --- some propaganda, others for real.

Anglo's roots go back to Cecil Rhodes and the Rhodes' Trust --- entities which are at the core of all recent "conspiracy" theories. For this reason, Anglo (as the name would imply) has a strong connection to British aristocracy and the Royals. This is another "string" to their bow --- the use of Her Imperial Majesty in the calming and deception of the "natives"! No-one must forget that the UK, and especially the folks just mentioned, have enormous investments in SAf.
