I don't think the "fixed point" reference was any more than an adjective that the interviewers could understand. Analog has a lot of engineering experience and skill in DSP for communications. This is a combination of math, communications signal theory and ic design. While I am sure Intel has a lot of each of these, especially the ic design, getting it all in one place has some value.
