Re: Iridium monthly access charge. Leon, I really don't know how much of that charge Iridium gets, but I'll ask my service provider and post the answer here.

Regarding building penetration by the two systems, it has been my understanding that Iridium has a higher link margin than Globalstar, and that would make in-building penetration by Globalstar something of a problem, though I doubt many people will use either system in that fashion.

Here's a question for anyone to answer: I've been told that Globalstar's system uses different bands for uplink and downlink, and that the downlink band is commonly known as a "trash" band and can interfere with, or be interfered with by, such transmissions as taxi cab radios and medical electronic equipment in hospitals; interfering with radio astronomy sites is also a problem for Globalstar, one which Iridium has dealt with. Does anyone have information that would shed light on this?

I've never used an Inmarsat system, commonly known as the Magellan World Phone, but I believe the system costs around $3500, and $5.00 per minute. Additionally, it requires the antenna be oriented to a geosynchronous satellite, incurring time delay in voice and precluding mobility while in use. I cannot see how such a system could remain economically viable with Iridium on the scene. I've seen their system advertised in a catalog called "Field Trips" - "Field" being the name of the founder of this particular mail order company.
