As Larry Kudlow's favourite dead economist, Joseph A Schumpeter wrote near the beginning of the century, Innovation is a process of creative destruction.

That "creative destruction" is happening on both a macroeconomic and microeconomic scale. Even within the companies announcing layoffs, they're growing in those parts of their business where innovation leads to either the promise or reality of excess profits.
