It is not mandatory to lower prices with better savings via use of technology. But it is not impossible either. You are confusing necessity and sufficiency here.

Your observation re the S.E. Asian DRAM manufacturers is rather accurate though. However, they had loans guranteed by the Govt. (via pegged exchange rates) which doesn't apply to the box makers in the US market.

IOW, CPQ is not slashing prices because they have an inheritance. They don't have a choice. And DELL is not slashing prices because of an inheritance-related reason either. They can simply afford to do so and the cost-benefit analysis (improved market share tomorrow vs. better margins today) is positive.
