Ed,
I agree with everything I've read except for your last post. If you went to the manufacturer and bought separately all the parts to build a car it would cost two or three times what the car as a whole costs even if you paid wholesale for the parts. There have been many studies to verify this as consumer groups complain about the high price of OEM parts.
I also think that if you separated the various divisions of many co's you would find the total of the pieces would be worth more than the market values the whole co. at. T cited this as one of the reasons for spinning off LU. The value in LU was hidden in the shadow of ma bell.
I would bet that there are at least of couple of LU's hiding in Mr. Softie waiting to come out into the sunshine. I'm not saying I think it's going to happen any time soon, but if it did I don't think it would be a bad thing for shareholders at all.
Anyone else have an opinion on this?
