Isn't this distance only for single-mode fiber? Haven't the DWM folks solved this problem using erbium doped fiber amplifiers? Are the concerns for SANs (vis-a-vis fiber length) different from telco concerns?

A change in the physical layer wouldn't upset the whole cart, would it? There are already several physical layers (copper, multi-mode and single-mode), why not just add another layer for longer distance? Any photonics engineers out there?
