Re: "New Alpha Workstation from Compaq Client Server News Jan 25-29
According to some NDA'd overheads that fell into our lap, there are going to be three models. An entry-level using Elsa Gloria 2D/3D graphics priced between $7,600 and $9,700 and two mid-range boxes, one using PowerStorm 300 graphics (1280x1024 true color, double buffered) priced up to $12,200 and another using PowerStorm 350 graphics (1920x1200 true color, double buffered) priced between $11,800 and $13,800. There should be some dual-display support and a RAID option. The widgets can handle up to 54GB internal disk while system memory can expand to 2GB. Memory bandwidth stands at 2.6 GB/s. Compaq's got unofficial SPEC numbers of 27 SPECint and 52 SPECfp, the floating point being leagues ahead of the competition which Compaq, interestingly enough, sees predominantly in Unix terms and compares to the Sun Ultra 60, the SGI Octane, IBM RS/6000 43P-260 and the HP C360. It will claim up to two times performance improve-ment over its rivals on select applications."
RDM, how about posting a link when you're quoting a source?
