Scumbria,

RE: CPUs and network cards are rapidly approaching the same price. In fact, it won't
be long before computers are free with your ISP subscription. Sort of like cell
phones.

I would suggest if you truly believe this then you should invest all your money into Microsoft as they will all need an OS. Your existence on either the AMD or Intel thread is pointless, as neither company will profit if what you believe is true.

If on the other hand you even peek an inch below the surface of your analogy, you may believe the cell phone is free. However, you do pay for the connect/service of a dial tone. I'll bet the company whom provided you with this phone didn't get it for free. So all that happened is a shift in who bought the hardware, somewhat like a cable box for your TV. Which in most parts of the country we as consumers rent. Why do we rent these things when we all know they cost less than a cell phone, and the monthly rate (including a signal) is $35-$80 a month.

Are you convinced that ISP's would give you a computer for free or perhaps they will follow the cable box model. Heck, if we're really unlucky the cable company will rent a computer set top box, with channel decoder and internet access and TV all in one for the nominal rental charge of $25 a month and $100 for the other services. I'd not like to see my monthly statement with four TV's in the house.

The part that really strikes me as funny in your "vision" of the future is the notion that the cost of the box, equates one to one with the cost of a cpu. I would suppose if all you ever did was "surf" you may have a market. Or do you suppose we will have functional voice recognition in the next couple years and the cable company will put set top boxes on every business desktop in the world? Your vision is the lowest function in the computing world where the internet is computing.
