All the President's surplus plans just don't add up

<< President Clinton has proposed using the US government's future budget surpluses to prevent the social security budget from falling into crisis.

He would also like to see some of the money invested in the stock market, rather than government bonds.

Generally, his proposals have generally had an excellent Press, though US Federal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan has expressed concern about the problems that might arise from the government owning so much of the stock market.

If anyone bothers to look back at the President's statement in three years' time it is likely that they will fall about laughing. It is highly unlikely that there will be any budget surplus in America to spend on anything. Greenspan need not worry. The money that Clinton wants to spend on the stock market won't be there. -- cont'd -- >>
