Glenayre Western Multiplex Introduces 4 x DS-3 Microwave Radios With 180 Mbps of Transmission Capacity
NEW ORLEANS, Feb. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Providing maximum capacity from a compact platform, Glenayre Western Multiplex (GWM) introduced today two new 4 x DS-3 microwave radios, each with 180 Mbps of transmission capacity. The WM 6/180 and the WM 11/180 radios, fully-loaded models of the company's new expandable WM-series licensed microwave radios, will be presented at CTIA's Wireless '99, the major wireless industry trade show on February 8-10, 1999, in New Orleans. These models operate in the 6 and 11 GHz licensed bands and are compliant with FCC Part 101 rules.
''These radios are the only products of their type providing network managers an affordable way to increase capacity on their wireless interconnect or Internet access links without making a huge commitment to SONET equipment,'' said Graham Barnes, senior vice president of sales and marketing for GWM.
''Competitive radios are based on a maximum payload of only 3 x DS-3 capacity, so that a radio at 4 x DS-3 is an innovative concept for users. These new radios should find a ready market as the need for increased wireless capacity for voice and data continues to grow. For an expanding voice or data network, a fourth DS-3 channel at saturated 3 x DS-3 nodes can help preserve capital investments in existing infrastructure,'' Barnes noted.
''A wayside T1 channel is included with each DS-3 channel, which can be allocated as a separate voice or data channel for BER testing or a LAN connection,'' he added.

Barnes noted the expandable WM radios can be upgraded in the field and while in service without removing the equipment shelf. The radios can be configured for 45, 90, 135 or 180 Mbps capacity using the same, very compact, nine-rack unit (9RU) chassis.
''The ability to maintain service at all times is critical to minimize end- user disruptions and to continue providing revenue for the wireless service provider,'' Barnes said.
Included in all WM Expandable platform radios is OpenNet(TM) Network Management that implements industry standard network and routing protocols. Barnes stated, ''OpenNet employs Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) as well as IP routing protocols to provide network managers all the tools they need to monitor performance within their microwave radio networks.''
