02/08 05:58 UK MPs expected to probe genetic modification

LONDON, Feb 8 (Reuters) - A high-powered parliamentary
committee is expected to launch a study into genetically modified
organisms amid growing concern in the British media about modified
foods.

A spokeswoman for the all-party Science and Technology Committee
on Monday denied a report in the Express newspaper that the
committee has already agreed on a new inquiry into the government's
handling of food safety scares.

But she said she expected that the committee would set up a "case
study" into genetic modification the details of which would be
announced later this week.

The probe was likely to go wider than food, and to look at the genetic
modification of plants and animals, she said.

Newspapers have recently stepped up campaigns against genetically
modified foods after the leak of an Agriculture Ministry briefing note
which said: "It is not possible to know the extent to which 'GM'
material is being used in animal feed in the UK."

Monsanto Co <MTC.N> has stirred the controversy with an
application to the European Union to be allowed to export two
modified foods, cotton seeds and corn, to the EU for incorporation in
animal feed.
