Patriot Scientific's PSC1000A Microprocessor Core Licensed by Unit of Japanese Electronics Industry Association
Microprocessor Facilitates Development of Low Cost Devices
SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 8, 1999-- Patriot Scientific Corp. (OTC:PTSC - news), the developer of the first market-ready microprocessor for Java(TM), today announced that Japan's Venture SystemLSI Assist Center (VSAC), has licensed Patriot's PSC1000A Java microprocessor core for its library of semiconductor cores.
The agreement with VSAC, which is part of Japan's Electronics Industry Association and funded by the Japanese government, will allow small- and medium-sized Japanese electronics companies to design and build prototype integrated circuits (ICs) utilizing Patriot's PSC1000A core without incurring up-front license fees. Patriot teamed with its Japanese distributor, RealVision, to secure the agreement.
Under terms of the agreement, VSAC will pay Patriot an undisclosed sum for the PSC1000A core license. Japanese companies working with VSAC and using the PSC1000A core in their prototype designs will also pay license fees and per-chip royalties to Patriot Scientific once in volume production.
''Japan is a key market for our microprocessor and this agreement further strengthens our position in the Japanese electronics market,'' said Jim Lunney, president of Patriot Scientific. ''We view this agreement as a strong win-win situation for both Patriot and VSAC's clientele. By providing an easy, cost-effective means of incorporating the PSC1000A into custom chip designs, VSAC is facilitating the growth of the Japanese electronics industry.''
''This agreement underscores the technical superiority of the PSC1000 and makes it very accessible and easy for Japanese electronics startups to design PSC1000 technology into their products,'' said Naoshi Sugiyama, president and chief executive officer of RealVision. ''We expect that it will greatly accelerate the PSC1000's penetration into the Japanese market.''
The Patriot PSC1000A Java microprocessor is the only true low-cost, high-performance, native Java processor. It is ideal for Internet-enabled information kiosks, cell phones, video phones, embedded Web servers, set-top boxes and a host of other new Internet appliances. The 32-bit microprocessor, based on Patriot's patented ShBoom(TM) technology, is designed to provide cost-efficient solutions for the growing number of new Java applications, as well as other traditional embedded systems markets.
''Our goal is to assist small Japanese companies with top-quality electronic design expertise necessary to compete in the global market,'' said Seigo Suzuki, director of VSAC. ''Patriot Scientific's PSC1000A provides Java capabilities in a low-cost, high-performance microprocessor. It is a welcomed addition to our library of semiconductor IP cores.''
Patriot will provide VSAC with both hard and soft cores from the PSC1000A. Hard cores have hand-packed, optimized designs, making them extremely efficient in both size and performance. Soft cores, on the other hand, offer a great deal of flexibility in design and simulation.
Founded in 1987, Patriot Scientific Corp. designs, manufactures and markets: the PSC1000A, based on the patented ShBoom technology, a 32-bit microprocessor targeted at Java and Internet appliances as well as the traditional embedded systems markets; high-performance ISDN Basic Rate and Primary Rate products for digital communications; and ground-penetrating radar and ionized gas antenna technologies.
