FROM SMARTMONEY-
Ralph Acampora's call for a market correction didn't put much of a dent
in the rally in the semiconductor sector. Merrill Lynch analyst Mark
FitzGerald raised his near-term recommendations and earnings estimates
on a host of chip equipment makers because January orders improved much
more than he had expected, and orders should accelerate this year. He
raised his ratings on Applied Materials, Cymer, KLA-Tencor and Novellus
Systems to Buy from Accumulate, and upgraded ASM Lithography, Lam
Research and Silicon Valley Group to Accumulate from Neutral. Morgan
Stanley Dean Witter analyst Jay Deahna also increased his ratings on
Applied Materials and KLA-Tencor to Strong Buy from Neutral.
