Speculatively, one should be able to clone an install that
had SP4 or SP3+atafix to a larger partition.

Put it another way; if I can't reinstall NT that way, I
don't want it in a large partition. How would I reinstall it?
How would I refresh the existing install if something gets
corrupted?

A partial answer might be that NT seems to handle large partitions ok
right off the cd (service pack 1); it's creating and formatting
where it apparently fails without ATAFix, though I certainly
haven't tested that exhaustively.

But I sure couldn't boot it.

I cloned it AFTER installing SP4 and it wouldn't boot in a large
partition. It was the boot itself - I never saw the NT
boot (as specified in boot.ini). Clone of same system
in a smaller partition booted right up. These partitions
were created by an SP4 NT and/or an SP3+ATAFix NT.
