Under the terms of a memorandum on technology and industrial cooperation between
Ericsson and the Ministry of Information Industry of the People's Republic of China (MII)
an Ericsson Research and Development center focusing on mobile internet technology
will be set up Beijing.
Ericsson will cooperate with the China Academy of Telecommunications Technology
(CATT) in an effort to facilitate the transfer of knowledge and further drive market
acceptance and opportunities for third-generation mobile Internet technology in China.
The center will be in operation by late 1999.
The agreement was signed after a high-level meeting in Stockholm between Madam Qu
Weizhi, vice minister of MII and Ericsson CEO Sven-Christer Nilsson.
GSM World Congress 1999
This year's GSM World Congress will take place Feb. 23-25 in Palais des Festivals,
Cannes, France. The congress is the premier GSM event of the year, bringing together
more than 200 international speakers and panelists, as well as operators and exhibitors
from around the world.
Ericsson will have a number of representatives participating in various panel
discussions, including, “Wireless data applications and revenues,” and “Building
foundations for third generation terminals and applications.” There will also be an
Ericsson exhibit that will display products and solutions such as: GSM on the Net,
GSM Pro, Edge – 3rd generation, WISE and WAP as well as a number of mobile
phones.
As in previous years, Ericsson will host a customer seminar in conjunction with the
congress. The seminar will be held on Monday, Feb. 22 and will include the launch of a
new product and various presentations. Customers tracking 3G developments will find
the papers on the GSM evolution toward third generation technology and GSM and the
Internet of particular interest.
Ericsson and T-Mobil sign world's first GPRS contract
In an important step for operators in the evolution toward 3G networks, Ericsson and
German operator T-Mobil (Deutsche Telekom MobilNet) have signed a contract to
implement GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) into T-Mobil's nationwide GSM
network.
The technology will enable T- Mobil to offer wireless Internet and other IP-based services
at speeds of up to 115 kbps – more than a tenfold increase from the current network
speeds. GPRS is a common step for both GSM and TDMA (IS-136) networks to handle
higher data speeds and offer 3G packet capabilities. With this common technology,
GPRS and the even faster Edge technology form a major step in the convergence of the
two standards.

ITU to hold meeting in Malaysia
On Saturday, Feb. 6, 1999, International Telecommunications Union (ITU) will host a
one-day meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The purpose of the meeting is to solicit
advice from ITU members on the best way to proceed with ITU's work in IMT-2000 – an
ITU initiative designed to provide wireless access to the existing global
telecommunications infrastructure. The meeting is necessary in view of current issues
related to intellectual property rights.

CeBIT World Conference 1999
The annual CeBIT trade show in Hannover, Germany, will take place March 18-24. Each
year, the conference brings together leading vendors, operators and industry
spokespeople in a forum to share information on the changing world of new technology
and business. The conference features more than 400 company presentations as well
as international congresses and symposia.
Ericsson will present future mobile solutions at its two stands: Mobile, situated in hall
26, stand D68; and Systems, situated in hall 17, stand B31. The focus for Ericsson will
be on the new generation of consumers who are embracing cutting-edge technology and
using it in their daily lives. Some of the key areas to be explored are: Wireless Office
and GSM on the Net; Data Networks and fixed Internet access; and Third Generation
mobile systems for IP-based services.
Experts from Ericsson will present papers and host seminars on these topics on Friday,
March 19, and Monday, March 22.
