In the article, he wrote that the word internet is shorthand for the explosion in data and voice transmission over wire, fiber optics, and radio waves.

Reading the article helped me crystalise a question that had been floating around in my mind:

It costs nothing to transmit data via wireless. I.e., once a bit is in the 'ether' it rides for free. But, bits sent over copper or FO have to 'rent space' on the line. So, I can't figure out what role FO will play in the future, when wireless bit transmission is better developed. Can anyone help me with this one?
