Layman's answer: Java programmers can now write programs to their hearts delight that run on embedded devices like cellular telephones, smart microwave ovens, automobile computers, smart cards, toys, etc. Java is an Internet programming language, which means that these embedded devices can be reprogrammed through the Internet. Insignia's Jene is currently the best software tool to make this feasible.
You have it. Note, however that JENE is not the only solution, and I don't have hands-on experience to say whether it is the best, though I hope to soon. Also, it will take special amounts of self-restraint on the part of most Internet Java programmers to make their programs work on cell-phones and the like.
Where it gets really exciting is that Jini enabled devices will be able to interact with Java programs on workstation class machines as if they were plugged into the insides of the machines, all with no plug-and-play problems, no device drivers to install, no manuals to read, and no cases to open.
