*AV*---WFR---This is a real crude analogy but:

WFR melts down beach sand and purifies the sand (Silicon dioxde) to its purest form of elemental silicon (remember your chemistry). They put this molten silicon into a huge crucible (vat or kettle). Then they open up their very magic box of special silicon crystals. These pure silicon crystals are precisely created to a special lattice structure (like the difference between a diamond's lattice structure and a lump of coal).

This special crystal in "glued" to the end of a stick and immersed into the vat of pure molten silicon. Gradually it is pulled from the molten silicon and just like stalagmites and stalatites that form in caves, the molten silicon "grows" onto the pure crystal as it is pulled and cools off. Thus the raw silicon ingot is created. The ingot is then precisely sliced like your deli salami to a consistent
thickness. Finally it is polished to a mirror shine.

A MeV implanter is a high energy particle accelerator that slams elemental/molecular elements like Phosphorous, Boron, or Arsenic
into a wafer much like dropping a penny off the World Trade Center. Yeah the concrete has a fixed structure or "lattice structure" but when that penny slams into the concrete, the penny becomes part of the sidewalk for life. The concrete is slightly stressed.

Sorta like comparing glass blowing at the local mall with precision needle point.

The epi provides a boundary media for either isolation of electrical circuitry or as a site for further dopant diffusion. MeV takes that same dopant and drives it into the precise place it is desired.
