Amazon Touts Books for Fees From Publishers, N.Y. Times Says <Picture>
Washington, Feb. 8 (Bloomberg) -- Amazon.com, the No. 1 online bookseller, is featuring books in prominent spots on its website in exchange for fees from publishers, the New York Times said. For prices ranging up to $10,000, a publisher can pay for services including a listing on the site's ''Bestseller,'' ''What We're Reading'' and ''Destined for Greatness'' pages, as well as author profiles or interviews, the newspaper said. Amazon executives told the Times that the firm reserves the right to refuse the promotion of books that do not meet its quality standards.
Amazon said last month that 1 million new customers shopped at its site for the first time between Nov. 17 and Dec. 31, and the company shipped 7.5 million items during the 1998 Christmas holiday season. |
