Howard,
hard to give you any advice, I do not know what kind of problem you had.

First, I would check different brokers. You may find very different situations. Some brokers will not allow anyone, Canadian or not, to buy BEARX, that's the problem of agreements they have (or have not) with funds. For example DATEK couldn't help me about 6 mos ago. Some brokers will make transfer for fee, like usual stock, at any time. Charles Schwab, if my memory is correct. Waterhouse will do it for free, but only before 2 pm. BTW, Waterhouse is somehow Canadian, so you may call them first. Unfortunately, they are very busy lately.

Sending check directly has some problems: post office will choose your entry point and you will have to keep all records by yourself.

Have a nice evening.
