Nokia to supply fixed network equipment to BITel, Germany

(February 9, 1999) - Nokia and BITel GmbH, based in Bielefeld, Germany have signed a contract for the provision of a total fixed network solution, for their city-wide network. The agreement, covers the supply of both Nokia transmission and switching equipment.

Nokia will supply its Synfonet® STM 1\4 transmission solution and its DX 220 digital switching systems, based on the Nokia DX 200 switching platform. The Nokia NMS Network Management System will also be provided, as well as a comprehensive range of customer services.

"Nokia were able to supply a complete network solution with a fast roll-out time," says Mr. Markus Wetzlar, Project Manager, System Installation, BITel. "The flexibility of Nokia's DX 200 switching platform is ideal as we will be able to expand the system capacity in line with demand, which is particularly important during the start up phase."

"We are pleased to announce this contract with a new customer for Nokia." says Mr Jörns Haberstroh Managing Director, Nokia Telecommunications, Germany. "The Nokia solutions will provide flexibility for BITel's requirements for its home and business users in a growing German market."

BITel GmbH, offers telecommunication services to private and business customers in the greater Bielefeld area. The company's offering includes telephony services and Internet access, as well as custom fixed-line and data communication solutions in metropolitan areas.

Nokia has developed a comprehensive SDH/WDM solution, the Nokia Synfonet family, for access and transport networks, incorporated under a full network management system. Nokia's SDH technology has been supplied to over 140 customers in more than 30 countries. Nokia's switching solutions and applications are built on the DX 200 switching platform, used in mobile and fixed applications alike. Nokia has delivered its DX 200 switching solutions to more than 140 operators in approximately 40 countries.
