Viagra is expected to be legally available in the SAR for the first time today - but doctors are not expecting a stampede for the anti-impotence drug.

Manufacturer Pfizer Hong Kong started taking orders from pharmacies yesterday and expected to deliver today.

Patients need a doctor's prescription to obtain the drug.

The wholesale price is $65 a tablet and the mark-up is about 10 to 20 per cent in medium-sized pharmacies.

James Ng Ming-yan, chairman of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Pharmacy, said he believed that most pharmacies would stock Viagra . "The drug is a very new product. They all want to test the response."

A pharmacist and owner of a Ma On Shan pharmacy, Kenneth Leung Kwong-hei, said he had ordered three packets. Each pack contains four 50-milligram tablets.

"Many customers keep asking us when Viagra will be available, but as the waiting list at public clinics is long, we are not quite sure when the patients can actually come in with a prescription."

Dr Andrew Yip Wai-chung, consultant urologist at Kwong Wah Hospital, expected that the hospital's male clinic alone would issue about 200 prescriptions for Viagra in the first week after its launch.

Dr Chan Kin-ling, chairman of the Hong Kong College of Family Physicians' public education committee, said many people had been using Viagra bought abroad. Those who were desperate to get it would already have done so.
