@Backup Chooses Citrix MetaFrame Server Software to Provide Mobile Users Secure Access to Applications
@Backup's SkyDesk Virtual Desktop, an Application Hosting Service, Allows End Users To Access Personalized Applications With Only A Browser Interface
PALM SPRINGS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 8, 1999-- Citrix Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:CTXS - news) today announced at Demo 99, that @Backup, a leading online backup application service provider, has implemented Citrix MetaFrame(TM) server farms to enable mobile users to transparently access a secure image of their complete desktop and applications from anywhere in the world. SkyDesk(TM), unveiled today, allows users to remotely operate an up-to-date copy of their personalized desktop with any Internet-connected browser that has a Citrix Independent Computing Architecture (ICA®) client for Web browsers.
SkyDesk's application hosting on centralized MetaFrame servers enables users, with only a browser connection, to reach their personalized desktops and applications from anywhere -- on existing PCs, Windows-based terminals, network computers, and a new generation of business and personal information appliances. The delivery of application services is facilitated by Citrix's MetaFrame server-based computing software, which processes applications centrally on the server and remotely displays the user interface, without regard to client device.
''By leveraging Citrix MetaFrame, SkyDesk is offering the mobile computing industry what it needs -- the ability to access enterprise applications and data from anywhere in the world, regardless of a device's storage abilities,'' said Traver Gruen-Kennedy, director of advanced business development for Citrix. ''We are seeing a growing popularity of the idea of a nettop. SkyDesk is bringing the cost and performance benefits of server-based computing to a wider range of users.''
''We're looking forward to working closely with Citrix to deliver the ubiquitous application access needed by mobile workers,'' said Gary Sutton, president and CEO of @Backup. ''Citrix's server-based computing architecture makes it possible for devices to use applications that are not actually stored on the device itself -- a key enabling technology for Internet appliances and kiosks. SkyDesk will make remote computing easy and at the price point designed to achieve deep penetration in the consumer sector.''
The ICA client for Web browsers, which features Windows® Application Launching and Embedding (ALE) support, allows full-function Windows-based applications to be embedded in or linked to HTML Web pages and accessed within a Web browser.
SkyDesk is the first product to allow individuals to access their personalized desktop, applications, and data files from any type of Internet device, regardless of location. SkyDesk provides an exact replica of the desktop with the user's customized configurations intact. SkyDesk uses @Backup's already proven storage and security technology to keep this virtual copy on a secure superserver in the SkyDesk off-site server farm, allowing the first universal remote desktop access in the industry.
SkyDesk will use Citrix server-based computing technology and add the intelligence to convert a snapshot image of a customer's desktop into an executable environment on SkyDesk's superservers.
