Scrapps,

Standards certainly aren't an issue for owners of USR Flash upgradeable modems and hubs. However, the first x-million 56k chips produced by Rockwell will NOT be flash based, and will have to be hardware updated with a new chip to match the standard.

Also, how about the 56k vs. 53k power limitations? USR server modems simply have software that limits the xmit speed to 53k. When the FCC passes on higher power levels, download a software patch, and voila', higher speeds. What's Rockwell going to do about that in their first-round non-upgradebale chips being installed Ascend, Cicso, Shiva, etc. ISP hubs?

Those are the reasons the Rockwell based ISPs are down on 56k technology. It doesn't have a damn thing to do with standards, except for their inability to adapt their existing and new equipment to it!
