Now that the month is over, I tallied up my results from playing the January effect.

I averaged:

+11% on the stocks,
+ 2% on the microcap mutual funds,
+46% on a Russell 2000 call that was at the money when I bought it.

I bought most of these Dec. 29-31.

For comparison, the Russell 2000 was basically flat for the month. At its intramonth peak, it was up 2% from Dec. 31. The only reason that I came out with a gain on the call is that I sold at a lucky time.

In many cases I sold before the end of January, but a couple of the smallest stocks I'm still holding.

For the stocks, I was surprised that I actually did better with the stocks that were more than $200 M market cap, because two of the tiniest stocks delivered negative returns.

Overall, I'm quite satisfied with my results for this January Effect play. I'm not sure how much of it was luck, though. I think that next year, I will forget the tiniest stocks and the mutual funds too.
