On the speed issue, my brother recently graduated from UCSD in computer engineering. He said that his profs were saying that the pentinum architecture is nearing max. If Apple can fix the bus and port speed transfer it'll do fine with the high end, regardless of the commodity pricing of the consumer. Clinton's St of Union speech focused on education to a great degree and web connectivity. The more "web" is heard rather than pc, the more Apple & clones can hold on to the education share IMO. Apple must focus here when the $$$ begin to flow upgrading the Apple II's. On Europe / Asia, one factor I haven't read about is national defense. Perhaps these countries are encouraging alternate platforms (Apple & Asian clones) to stave off Wintel domination? Especially in light of the demise of homegrowns (Olivetti, Siemens, etc).
