CHAPK...Depends on whose pockets are being lined.... by: SmartWire (M/Chicago, IL) >>I agree with your bullish outlook on NOVL, Java-Jini, the network as a giant universal computer, but nearterm, isn't Banyon+Win2000 a negative for NOVL? At the risk of showing my technical ignorance, isn't it just possible that Mr Bill ties the Banyon Directory to Win 98, calls it "Win2000 Enterprise Edition" and brings it out NEXT MONTH?? Isn't this just the sort of FUD-scam which has made Gates a billionaire?>>
The potential Banyon Directory-Win 98 Pre-win2000 small enterprise bandaid is going to line Microsoft's pockets.
The world is fast shifting away from Windows into "internet space" in "internet time".
Those who develop apps for Novell's NDS will own critical mind/eyeball and earball shares of what's really important - getting marketshare for value-added products and services driven by open-sourced apps that are supported by multiple legacy local domains, but are accessible to ALL via the Internet.
Gate's move to embrace the Banyon-bandaid not only jeopardizes their relationship with Cisco, it's a call to arms for every windows-friendly app development shop that he really wants to destroy or freeze out enough of the existing market so that he has more time to work on Win20000.
So expect more FUD. But the world is up on Gates games.
With NDS, its the app developers and the supporting infrastructure players who have the potential to out circle Gates and grab app marketshare in this new Internet game that's just started with Wave 2.
The Banyon move exposes a King without clothes.
FUD or no FUD, we have a HUGE feast on our hands as the world moves to embrace OPEN software and networking solutions that benefit more than just Microsoft.
Windows won't give up without a fantastic fight. It will be mean and ugly. They are known to throw every punch know to mankind in the singleminded pursuit of power and control.
Gates moves are so obvious to the rest of the world that the point is not whether he's going to go down ugly, but whether these new competitors can continue to be patient in riding this open wave of exploding bandwidth for the necessary amount of time, devoting the right amount of white-hot energy needed to beat back the beast.
Again, open up and grow. That's the equation for growth. Microsoft wants not only everyone to open up to THEM, but they want to be in a position to pick the winners and losers in the app development game on THEIR train cars that ride on THEIR tracks.
With the Internet growing like mad, the world is pushing away from these closed solutions. Gates has the entire world enterprise deck stacked against him.
If Windows 2000 WAS ready. If ActiveDirectory HAD 6+ years of development behind it.....If, if, if.....
This is not flinch time. You have to see the vision and ACT, NOW. Those who wait during this FLUX POINT while Windows of opportunity remain open will end up defaulting to the King, giving up valuable freedom and growth in the bargain.
Interesting times we are living in.
The same themes are playing out in Congress. The only problem there is that a few Senators may blink and looked the other way.
"Fixes" are a part of life, I agree. But when you reach for the easy fix, the longer term costs to freedom, flexibility and growth are never factore in.
Nobody likes to rock the boat. There are too few leaders out there. Gates and Clinton know that the world is a crowd that can be manipulated.
Perhaps Clinton can take Gates to the UN to provide the political lock for governments worried about opening up. Too much freedom can be a dangerous thing to many of their ilk.
Now I'm beginning to feel like Henry Hyde.
Forgive me everyone....
