MSFT has some problems in considering software design. In my opinion they always try and provide too much backward compatibility.

When contracting there on win98 someone told me, "they're going to try and make nt 5 (win 2000) upgrade over win95/8 and that will really suck."

I respected this man's opinion and without going into details, considered it to have been valid.

Now they're talking about patching win98 and calling it win99 or whatever.

They were supposed to have a unified OS years ago, and they're still not even close.

Perhaps they have to consider that the "swiss army knife" approach is not working, and they should design a modular os which would allow the user to load only the components necessary for that (often dedicated to one task) machine.

They could have windows for games, for instance, or windows for telecommunications. This catch-all, be-all, backward compatible approach is suspect, in my opinion. It has been, is, and will be an ongoing dilemna for them.

FWIW
Andy
