I agree with you, Neocon, on all three points.
I just have a feeling that this culture is swinging back to social repression. I am sensitive to the battle of morality is fought over women's choices. Physicians and medical personnel have lost there lives here. So much of the political agenda these days is about private and social issues where I feel a government is intrusive at its worst.
Social repression can work as a tool to limit access, limit opportunities. If there is one trope for our culture, it is opportunity. It is our symbol for cohesion and we have the institutions or whatever other magical things that have occurred to have a very vibrant market economy, of course the matrix supreme for opportunity.
A. I also feel that fidelity is a quality of a relationship, that is defined by the people in it and should remain something defined internally not externally.
I feel values are best developed through one's education, parents, experience and are not to be legislated, or in this case,... well we would probably argue here as I see it. I prefer to find something we could define jointly from this excess in terms of shared values.
I guess there's a dicey ground where you say not every can be allowed and everything can not be disallowed. This culture has major swings between permissiveness and repression, the balance? A dissertation topic..
B. The Paula Jones example may be as you say. The case was not prosecuted. Clinton may have other virtues but clearly he has a weakness with sex. The record seems clear to me that Lewinsky was a consenting adult.
C. The testimony during the house hearings by legal academics and prosecutors raised the question in my mind that it is not so clear cut that perjury had really occurred. Obstruction? It's looking possible. I am curious about Christopher Hitchen's affidavit on Blumenthal and don't have a clear idea yet of what happened.
As for objecting to Clinton's behavior in a trial of this magnitude, others believe strongly that it was necessary. I don't. I am more pushed that Clinton ordered a strike on a facility in Sudan, in less than circumspect manner.
