Rajiv: My hypothesis on your 'clearing' question is that the brokers who allow naked shorting buy the stock which you wish to short. They could then allow the client to sell it, ensuring that the client retains sufficient equity in the account to cover the price of the stock. Should the client's equity become insufficient, they could buy-in to cover the position, using money from the client's account. Does this make sense? Peter
