I was disappointed in the thread's response to the news about the new wireless chip announced yesterday. Let me throw a number at you: 162,900,000. That is the number of wireless phones sold worldwide in 1998. It was a 51% increase over 1997, and represents nearly $28 billion in annual sales. This new CDMA chip coming out at 18 microns is an extraordinary event. CDMA is the standard throughout Europe and most of Asia. It will probably win out over TDMA in North America as soon as the telephone companies get their act together. Bell Atlantic and Air Touch have CDMA networks but they are not compatible. If Ericsson and Nokia aren't standing in line to at least get a look at this thing, I'd be most surprised. Certainly this is the reason for the move yesterday, and not the brokerage house upgrade. This is an event.
