Whew..lot of reading there. FWIW, my first CD player came from Japan..they didn't have them here. People said they would never replace records. HA..
PAC quality can be CD quality, and will be portable.
RE: price..don't overlook the fact that via the internet..for the first time ever, musicians now have a shot at controlling their own destiny. Instant (literally) world wide exposure. The machine is going to have to change. Through an internet site the musician can eliminate the middlemen and go direct very cheaply and still make the same money..they would want some sort of protection so they make money no doubt. That would be one of the systems being looked at.
The exact type of portable player is up in the air right now..hence all the prototypes. The RIOs have sold over 100k so far and climbing. Will the powers that be quell the piracy? Who knows. Probably. There a lot of great musicians out there that a fellow could download for free, and probably always will be. This is going to be a huge change, and is happening faster than most thought would be possible.
PS ..what if they watermark the DVD or CD and you can't copy it without a special player??? They also have plans to try and control how many times you copy it.
Things will all sort themselves out, then some new method will come along and change it yet again...Don't forget about satellite radio too.
